Builders hardware is one of a few categories of functional hardware that are specified, since these products impact life safety and security. As such, ANSI/BHMA standards are reopened at least once every five years after their respective publication.
“BHMA is the sole organization accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to develop and maintain performance standards for builders hardware. Assessing the progress and mapping the next steps for each standard is a crucial part of our mission as an organization to enhance public safety and the security of buildings,” said BHMA Executive Director, Ralph Vasami. “Builders hardware products are expected to remain operational at all times—and under all conditions—and BHMA’s robust product standards program continuously works to ensure that they do.”
