BHMA Technical Bulletin: Power Operated Doors

 

INTRODUCTION

Two long-standing sections of the International Building Code (IBC) addressing requirements for doors in the means of egress are resulting in too many “scratch your head” situations. This BHMA Technical Bulletin attempts to illustrate the types of doors addressed by 2009 & 2012 IBC Section 1008.1.4.2 Power-operated doors (revised to Section 1010.1.4.2 with the 2015 and 2018 IBC), and to differentiate these from the type of doors addressed by 2009 & 2012 IBC Section 1008.1.4.3. Horizontal sliding doors (revised to Section 1010.1.4.3 Special Purpose Horizontal Sliding, Accordion, or Folding Doors with the 2015 and 2018 IBC),
